CCTHITA Solid Waste Workshop, Gustavus/Skagway 2001

On May 7-9, 2001 the Central Council Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska (CCTHITA) hosted a Solid Waste Management Workshop in Gustavus and Skagway, AK. Participants were from the four demonstration tribes and included: Paul Weston from the City of Yakutat, Rose Mael from the Native Village of Chefornak and Marvin Raymoth from the Native Village of Selawik.

The format of the workshop was approximately 15% presentation, and 85% discussion, tour and demonstration of the facilities in Gustavus, Glacier Bay and Skagway. To check out a "virtual tour" of the workshop, click on the sun below. Note: this file is 1.2mb and may take awhile to open.

Rural Alaska Landfill Operators (RALO) Course

The following information about RALO training is from ADEC and Alaska Forum for the Environment.

The RALO training course is for landfill operators in a village with a Class III landfill or open dump and focuses on the duties of the landfill operator, personal safety, and the safety of the village. The RALO courses are held in different villages throughout the year.

Participants of the RALO course will learn about landfill regulations and requirements, household hazardous waste, waste separation and screening, waste reduction and segregation, recycling, personal protection equipment, and much more.

Limited funds are available on a reimbursement basis for pre-approved participants where the following conditions are met:

Participant has recommendation and approval from the village, city, or tribal council.
Participant has received prior approval for cost reimbursement from the Alaska Forum on the Environment.
Participant agrees to comply with all local ordinances.
Participant must be employed or designated as a landfill operator in an interior area village.
Participant must successfully complete the training and receive their RALO Certification.
Participant completes the registration forms and is approved in advance by the Alaska Forum on the Environment.

There is no charge for the RALO training for participants that have registered and have been approved for the qualifications listed above.

The RALO certification training is conducted with the support of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Alaska Chapter, Alaska Department of Env. Conservation (ADEC), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Alaska Dept. of Labor – Denali Training Fund, the Denali Commission, and the Alaska Forum on the Environment

Manager of Landfill Operations (MOLO) Course

The following information about MOLO training is from ADEC and Alaska Forum for the Environment.

The MOLO Course is designed for landfill operators in communities that have Class I or Class II landfills and are seeking their national Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Certification. In past MOLO courses, participants have learned about waste acceptance and screening, leachate and bioreactor landfills, landfill gas, operational techniques, compliance inspections closure and long-term care, landfill economics, and state/provincial regulations.

The MOLO certification training is sponsored with the support of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Alaska Chapter, Alaska Department of Env. Conservation (ADEC), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Alaska Dept. of Labor – Denali Training Fund, the Denali Commission, and the Alaska Forum on the Environment and the North Slope Borough.

Most of North Star's training work is within Native Alaska Communities throughout the state (rural training is their specialty). Their office is in Wasilla but they travel to any place where needed. They prefer to train in the home Villages of the people receiving the training because they go out and see for themselves what the real issues are.
