Kasaan, Craig, Klawock, and Hydaburg purchased inside and outside
recycling bins through an AITC grant in 1998-99.

Their outside recycle bins were purchased for around
$600 and their indoor stackable bins were purchased for around $13
each (not including shipping). All the bins were purchased from:

Make
your own
Simple recycling containers can be made out of garbage
cans or any other containers you have around. Having a lid with
a small hole on top of the container can help to remind people
that the container is for recyclables only.
Also, marking the containers well with “Recyclables” will
help keep trash out.
Glacier Bay Facility
The Glacier Bay National Park Waste Management Facility near Gustavus
in the Southeast built a fantastic recycling sorting and storage
system. See pictures of their facility below:
These are “shoots” for different
kinds of materials. (Each shoot is labeled). They rest over a
sorting table. This is an innovative and efficient design!

Bag holders are positioned on the other side of “shoots”.

Bags of recyclables from the “shoots” are
then taken to the recycling storage area. The compact and flexible
design of the storage area takes up little space and is easy to keep
organized.

If you would like to talk to the Park Service
about how they built their recycling bin system, contact Dan
Thorington at 697-2367 or 697-2714.
